History of Refocussing

History of RefocussingThis is the original, authorised site of Refocussing.

Dr Diane Divett (Ph.D; M.Ed ¹st Class Hons; B.Ed, Dip Tchng, MNZCCA, MNZAC) is the sole originator and developer of the counselling theory and practice called Refocussing.

Dr Divett has been involved in pastoring and counselling for almost 30 years . During this time she felt ‘called by God’ and motivated to research and develop a counselling theory specifically designed for the Christian culture.

This ‘call’ culminated in her discovering what she called ‘God spaces’, which she detailed in her research at the University of Auckland in 1995. It was because of this ‘discovery’, that  she was then able to go on and develop the theory and practice of Refocussing.

After Diane had developed and documented the early foundations of Refocussing theory in 1995, she then began to train and teach people in its use. Also,  because she felt the need to provide further credibility and validity for the theory she had developed, and been given stewardship of, she later went on to spend a further 5 years at the University of Auckland (top 1% Universities worldwide), to complete a Ph.D. Her academic supervisors and international markers of the (120,000 word) thesis she researched speak of Refocussing theory and its practice in glowing terms, especially the originality of her groundbreaking work (see testimonials).

As well as her own research, Diane encouraged the team she trained to similarly engage in post-graduate research, in order to provide greater analysis, critique and validity for Refocussing theory. Thus, Jane Kay, Dianne Spain, and Jill Findlay, who have all worked alongside Dr Divett since or before 1993 and later Chris Jenkins since 1998. All have all completed post graduate research and now as a result of their own skills and expertise each are registered facilitators of Refocussing.

Diane believes the core concepts of Refocussing, particularly the awareness of and conceptualizing of the “Godspaces” was a revelation from God for which she has the responsibility of stewardship.

She believes that the theory and practice of Refocussing requires monitoring and careful supervision in order to preserve its theological integrity and soundness, so that it can remain part of the mainstream orthodox Christian thinking; for which it was created. This has involved a responsibility for ensuring adequate supervision and ongoing training of Refocussing facilitators in particular and also those who are practitioners, so that its reputation and integrity is maintained.

Dr Divett also sees her responsibility to ensure that the theory and practice of Refocussing with its established reputation in the academic and Christian communities, is not distorted by other theories and practices in the hands of unregistered practitioners or those who lack approriate academic qualifications.

Therefore, a register of authorised teachers, facilitators and counsellor (all of whom are properly trained and supervised) has been established. These registered facilitators all share a common concern for these issues. The registered facilitators and teachers are listed on this web site, while the registered supervisors and therapists names are held by the Refocussing office verifiable by contacting us.

If you are offered Refocussing services via web-sites other than this the official web-site, or by unregistered facilitators, teachers, supervisors or counsellors, we strongly urge you to contact us to discuss their position before engaging their services.

This includes the selling or translation of Refocussing written materials in any other country or language  (French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, etc) , by authors implying to represent Dr Diane Divett.

It is in your interest to protect the pastoral, academic and professional community by checking the validity and veracity of such people to prevent plagiarism and copyright infringement.
